About

A register of made things and built places, described rather than recommended.

This publication describes material culture across the subcontinent: what is made, where it is made, who makes it, what it is made from, and what holds it up.

It is organised as a register rather than as a magazine. Every entry carries the same six fields — tradition, region, the community or workshop that works it, material, structure or method, and a filing number — so that traditions can be compared against one another instead of read one at a time. The number is a position in the register, not a rank, and it stays with the entry wherever it appears: in the table, under a photograph, at the head of a page.

The signature

Every entry names the region and the community that works it. A subcontinent's worth of distinct material cultures is not one national craft, and no region here stands in for the country. Where a practice belongs to a named community — Khatri printers in Kachchh, Chhipa printers at Bagru, Salvi weavers at Patan — the entry says so, because the community is part of the description and not a detail.

What this is not

This is not a tourist board, a government office, an agency or a travel service, and it is not affiliated with any. It carries no visiting information: no itineraries, no opening hours, no tickets, transport, accommodation or advice of any kind. Living traditions and religious buildings are described with precision and without spectacle.

Photographs and terms

Photographs are credited beneath their captions; the caption carries the information and the credit stays subordinate to it. Terms in Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi and other languages appear where they are the right word for the thing, and are glossed in English the first time they are used. The publication carries no dates.
